Zoology

Zoology is the study of animals. Animals are fascinating creatures. They came in all shapes and sizes; some are so minute that we need microscope to see them; others are exceptionally large (Blue Whales). Animals live in different habitats. Some are terrestrial, aquatic and arboreal.  Where ever they are they seem to be perfectly at home. Desserts are harsh places with high temperatures, low vegetation and rain fall but animals live there.

There are animals that are injurious to our interest, they harm our crops, and animals cause diseases in human and our animals. However, there are others that prey on pests and parasitized them and reduce their members and help protect our crops. Study of pests and animal diseases and causative organisms is important component of Zoology.

Animals display a wide range of behavior and patterns. Studying understanding there behaviors is vital in regard to wildlife conservation and management. Animals have acquired special significance in last few decades as source of food. Cattle farming sheep, goat, fish farming and poultry farming are important segment of modern economy. Moreover sea food industry is a multibillion dollar industry these days.

Students of Zoology are providing basic training in the disciplines of Genetics, Biotechnology, Virology, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Ichthyology, Entomologists and Wildlife Management etc.

History

The Department of Zoology was established in March, 2013. At present, the department offers BS 4 years (Zoology, Biotechnology and Microbiology) M. Phil 2 years and PhD programs with different courses ranging from Microbial Biology to advanced disciplines such as Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Human Molecular Genetics. The department offers specializations in the field of Virology, Parasitology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Endocrinology, Toxicology, Microbiology, Wildlife and Ecology at Post Graduate levels. The department is committed to ensure the quality teaching and research in the different areas of Zoology which meet all the educational standards of Higher Education Commission.

Mission & Vission

  1. To impart knowledge about the major disciplines of Zoology. It will enable the students to understand the principles of organizations and inter-relationships in the biological systems with particular reference to animal diversity.
  2. To teach different methods of exploration, investigation, organization of data and its utilization in practical life.
  3. To train students for advanced studies and specialization on recently emerging technological and multidisciplinary fields such as Genetic Engineering, Biodiversity, Environmental Science, Wildlife and conservation, Fisheries and aquaculture, Pests and pest management, Biotechnology, etc. After completing the degree / students will be able to apply their knowledge to their respective fields effectively.
  4. To equip students with knowledge and skills for better planning and management of animal resources, environment, health, medicine, agriculture and population in the country.
  5. To develop the scientific culture and demonstrate professional skills in teaching / research/ managerial positions in wide range of professions in national and international organizations.
